CPI Movements (3, 6, 12 months)

The Consumer Price Index Movements (3, 6 and 12 months) for Niue for the quarter ending September 2011

The Niue Consumer Price Index (CPI-All Groups denotes CPI) for the quarter ending September 2011 stood at 153.3 points, 5.2 points (rounded) higher than that of the previous quarter ending June 2011. This difference is translated to a 3.48% price movement or inflation rate (Table 2). It indicates that in general the prices of goods and services purchased by consumers have increased by almost four percent in the last three months (June- September) compared to the 0.12% movement in the previous three months ending June 2011. The YTD (year to date: September 2011) movement of the CPI now stood at 3.6% high or an increase of prices of goods and services of the same.

The increase: In the opening quarter of this year the New Zealand the CPI stood at 4.5% and this was the result of the increase of GST from 12.5 percent to 15 percent. Because of the trade links we have with New Zealand this movement at some stage may influence the prices of goods and services here in Niue.  As prices of goods and services are back on the rise again the buying power (salaries and wages) of the consumer will certainly diminished.
